IMO, we've been at (and passed) that point for a long, long time for anything except the simplest of ports.

21k+ pieces of random third party software, all held together with make(1) glue? Rube Goldberg was an amateur ;)

I agree with both of you; however, its the path we've chosen and if you
do know them they make maintenance much easier and less error prone.
