For recording from all types of sources including your microphone I
would recommend Audio Hijack Pro from Rogue Ameoba
http://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/

It's been one of the most useful apps for me as I like to record
streamed radio stations as well as short voice snippets. At only $32
this is quite a bargain compared to other apps that just might do input
recording.

The only thing is that it does not come with a sound editor but has a
button to link to your favorite sound editor. Hope that helps.

if all you want to do is record sounds, just use quicktime player and
pick new audio (or video) recording.

note that snow leopard gutted quicktime and i'm not sure if this was
one of the many features apple thought to remove (and then have the
gall to call it an upgrade), so you may need to manually install
quicktime 7 from the system dvd.

I'm not an audio expert, but I recommend Amadeus.

However, I have not tried it on 10.6 yet.

Works fine here, and another recommended as well. A nice app with some
good easy to use tools.

It's also possible to use Garageband if that came with your Mac.
