My specific installation has repeatedly "forgotten" passwords, and an "incremental" load of a newsgroup can take 15 minutes. With no help, it's pretty useless. I can't even find a way to terminate my monthly "search" subscription!

Ahhh...I now understand...you are using his newsgroup and that is the problem....not with grabit itself....I use it all the time...but not on his newsgroup and it has worked...and is working fine.... Perhaps you did not know you can use grabit on any newsgroup that has binaries....
