The time draws nigh for a new computer. There are still XP boxen around, XP
being my current OS and one which seems to do everything I want a computer
to do. So my question is whether Win7 plays well with freeware, especially
portable freeware, and if there are any significant differences between the
32 and 64 bit versions as far as freeware is concerned.

That's too big a question for most people. It depends entirely on
*which* freeware you like and use currently I would say.

I went from XP 32-bit to Win 7 x64. The only freeware app that didn't play
nicely was Comodo's firewall (or Internet Security or whatever they call it
now). I switched to PC Tools and all is well. Of course, we all have
certain preferences when it comes to freeware/software. Mine runs. Yours
might not.

Win 7 x64 is very light on its feet. XP was a rock-solid workhorse that
gone the job done. My install of Win 7 has been much faster and more
responsive. It took some getting used to because I skipped over Vista, and
Win 7 is what Vista should have been.

Freeware will not be your problem. It is legacy type devices that you
may be attaching to your PC that will no longer work because there is no
Win 7 driver. You should use Microsoft's compatibility center (see link
below) to see whether a driver exists for your devices that may be a few
years old.

I had XP on a sata drive, moved it to a spare ide drive using > XXCLONE
( which I have used many times before )
http://xxclone.com/idwnload.htm
Removed the XP ide drive & installed W7 ( 32 bit ) on the clean sata
drive, using the built in W7 remove partition & format option.
After making sure both drives worked perfectly on their own, I left
both drives jumpered as master & connected to their respective cables.

Now I choose which operating system I want to use, by pressing F8
during boot or pressing Del & going into the bios & selecting.
F8 & Del are the keys on my bios version, it does vary from motherboard
to motherboard.
If I don't want to change opererating systems, I do nothing & it boots
into the one I have choosen as default.

All my programs worked on W7 including older versions such as FastStone
Screen Capture ( This is the last freeware version, beginning with ver.
5.4, it is now shareware)
