I am trying to restore a Portal on a different machine.I restored my
_SITE, _SERV and _PROF databases to the new server. I went to Sharepoint
Admin, create portal site, and selected
restore. Fill in the correct database names, and it starts going, put at 1%,
it fails. The log shows this:

09/11/05 16:28:35:421 UNK 00000000 00000F3C Portal creation failed
System.ApplicationException: Unable to find entry for Portal Site in sites
hosted by database at Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.Admin.c.f()

Pls. Help

Look around a bit more. Are there any other error messages? What
permissions does your SPadmin account have on the SQL server?

In portal creation you can specify the databases, try that instead of using
the default.

Yes, this is what I am doing, see below my steps:
On the test server I install SQL server and SPS

1 I install SPS from scratch with SP1 and hotfix for both SPS and WSS. So
now I have the same version on the production server and the test server.
2- Restore the _Site, _SERV, _PROF databases to test server
3- On SPS Central Admins I configure the server topology component
assignments to use the test machine.
4- On Specify Configuration Database settings I select create configuration
database and Specify custom name.
5- On create a portal site Restore a portal then select the test server
name and type all the databases names.
