Occasionally there's an event which causes my desktop icons to be rearranged
and resized, such as plugging in a monitor with differnt characteristics. Is
there a way to save the icon layout, size and other characteristics so that
it can be easily restored when the original monitor is attached, rather than
manually dragging each one back?

There are many free utilities that will do this.

I use IconRestore.

http://download.cnet.com/Icon-Restore/3000-2072_4-10163499.html

After installing, right-click on any folder on the desktop to save and
restore desktop arrangement.

Hi, Gord-

I haven't tried Icon Restore yet, but I saw a warning that it cannot be
uninstalled in the usual way via the Windows uninstaller. There's a link to
an uninstall program: http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html
(But the reviews were terrific and nearly unanimous!)

Some time ago, I resolved that I would accept alphabetic
arrangement rather than spend time on clever sorting by
function, etc. Then a quick "arrange icons by name"
will recover from any rearrangement event. I have renamed
a few icons so that arrange-by-name will put birds of a
feather together.
