Folks,

A friend living in Spain is looking to buy a Macbook Pro. For a variety
of reasons, he expects to buy it locally. I'm assuming he'll only be
able to get it with a spanish keyboard and that Snow Leopard's
language will be in Spanish.

I can answer most of his questions, but there are two where I'd only be
guessing:

a) Will there be a way to re-install the software which comes with the
machine so it runs UK Snow Leopard? If so, great. If not, would he be
OK to buy the 25.00 UK Snow Leopard and install it?

b) Assuming he does get UK Snow Leopard installed OK, will the spanish
keyboard upset things? (For example, what will happen to the key which
has the letter n with the tilde over it - will it just not do
anything?)

I'd appreciate the group's comments.

Thanks
Peter

P.S. Are there any 'gotchas' I should know about?

There *is* no UK version of Snow Leopard AIUI. There's one
international version that supports all regions/keyboards/etc.

In /System/Library/Keyboard
Layouts/AppleKeyboardLayouts.bundle/Contents/Resources there are
references to lots of keyboards and languages.

There are two different Spanish keyboards according to the
InfoPlist.strings files under that directory:

"Spanish" = "Spanish";
"Spanish - ISO" = "Spanish - ISO";

I don't know what the differences are.

No need - just change the language settings.

He gets the choice of either using the keyboard in Spanish mode, where
the keys will match the letters entered on the screen, or setting it
to eg UK mode, where the keys won't necessarily match.

Not really, apart from the mismatch thing. I used to buy all my
portables from the US, which has a mildly different layout to the
English keyboard. You just get used to working with it, whichever way
you choose.

Not necessarily. When I bought my MBP (from the Apple Store online) in
the Netherlands, I was offered the choice of a Dutch, US or
International English keyboard.

Cheers,

Thanks for the ever-helpful and useful replies, folks: better than I'd
hoped!

(As is so often the case, there are options and utilities hidden away
in OS X which *I've* never needed, so I had no idea they were lurking
under the surface.)

Much obliged...
