As most of you probably know, the link between SAS-L and comp.soft-
sys.sas is down. The link was made here (when the newsgroup was set
up, the connection was made at American University. After that went
away, UGA took it on.)
For some time now, our sysadmins have wanted to shut down our
newsserver. As it developed, our upstream news feed was in the same
situation. So when they took their server down, the link went with
it. The server is still here, but it is not likely it will be put
back on the net.
I am looking for another way to make the connection and will do this
if I find one.
I regret the breaking of the link.

Joe,

Sorry for a stupid question, but does this mean that SAS-L via
GoogleGroups (comp.soft-sys.sas) is now completely separate from the
true SAS-L hosted by the University of Georgia (
http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/sas-l.html )?

I find the GoogleGroups interface to be easier to browse, but will
make a point of visiting the True SAS-L if the two are indeed
separate.

Thanks for all of your hard work over the years.

Bill,

Yes, unless Joe can figure out how to correct the situation, the two
appear to be functioning totally independently. As such, when I post
here (on usenet via Google Groups), I always cc to: SAS-
L(a)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU

Conversely, if I email a response (via AOL mail) I cc both:
SAS-L(a)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU and
mail2news-YYYYMMDD-comp.soft-sys.sas(a)m2n.mixmin.net
(where YYYYMMDD MUST be the current YearMonthDay)

That way, one's post appears on both the listserv and usenet.

Art,

I appreciate the clarification, and understand that I need to learn
how to cross-post to the now separate branches of SAS-L. I have seen
your other tips for doing this in a related thread and will see how I
can follow your lead.

Sounds like all of us need to make this kind of an effort to ensure
the rift between UGa's SAS-L and the usenet SAS-L does not get too
wide.

We'll also need to do a better job of searching The Archives and then
the usenet SAS-L archives before posting up with what we might think
is a new question.

Thanks for your time.

Kumar,

I'm don't use Gmail, so I'm not sure if it posts to Google Groups
automatically. If it doesn't, cc to the other address I mentioned
(i.e., the one that you have to ensure is updated to match the current
date:
mail2news-YYYYMMDD-comp.soft-sys.sas(a)m2n.mixmin.net
(where YYYYMMDD MUST be the current YearMonthDay).

I've done that with this response, thus expect it to appear on both the
listserv and Google Groups.
