From: Arno on 8 Nov 2008 15:03 Hi Al, Maybe this will help (a little). I noticed your post and guess what. I am strugeling with the same kind off issue here for about half a year now. Just to give you some idea of what I all have tried so far: Acer Altos G540 with LSI MegaRaid 8704ELP controller. Running SAS RAID 1 for System and SAS Raid 5 for Data. Backup up to a Sony SDX570V tape drive connected to USB. SBS 2003R2 Premium with ISA installed. Symantec EPP V11.300(MR3 latest patch). Symantec Mail Security For Exchange V6. If I backup to tape the server always crashes, but at random moments. That is... it comes in an unresponsive state. No display motion, no mouse or keyboard and the time freezes at that moment. User cannot access the server resources as well. I have set by the server for hours to follow the process. (disable screensaver and disable power down monitor, so you can see where the backup stops. Othwerwise I only had a black unresponsive screen). Sometimes it stops at C:\ drive, some times at D:\. Sometimes at exchange or even at the verify. Anyway, Power Cycle is the only option for I which I always sign a cross before doing that. Further more there is nothing logged in the event log, except the last backup state (starting backup of d:\ for instance). I made several adjustments to SBS; Re-registering vss, rsm database, COM+ objects and so on. Also I applied several hotfixes after talking to MS. We replaced the mainboard and tape drive. Flashed the BIOS and Raid controller Firmware. Disabled some settings in SEPP and SMSFE: - Disabled scan files during backup. - Scan files when modified (instead of when accessed). - SMSFE disabled mailbox scanning and set it to scan on SMTP tranfes instead. - Disabled any scheduled scans to make sure they do not interfear. If we backup to SATA disk (connected to the same RAID controller, oughh) al seems ok. Backup to external USB disk drive fails as well. Got an identical server in, with regular SATA disks. Restored a backup from the problematic server on it and guess what. Right now it's running for a week in a row on the same USB tape drive. I noticed a post on HP forum with almost identical description. http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1089051 Since you are running a DELL, I am really beginning to consern about SBS itself. I have excluded almost every possibility here and getting absolutily stuck. To make it complete (and stunning): At our own office we are running the same server, but with SATA RAID-1 disks (on the onboard controller) and SATA tape drive (on a dedicated controller). SEPP and SMSFE are both loaded default and it's running for almost two years now without problems. Have you got any extra information you can share here?
