Just re-read that , checked the Backup User account (rather than the tape changer account) and yes - the account seems to have been disabled. Thanks for the pointer, I'll be back in a bit if thats not the problem :)
From: Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] on 15 Jul 2010 16:40 What is the exact text of the error you're getting when you try to open the Backup console? Are there any errors in the event logs? -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Annon" <Annon(a)spameater.yum.yum> wrote in message news:eVhvKzFJLHA.4824(a)TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" <mwport(a)no_spam_hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:%23zE1CeFJLHA.5720(a)TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> Has the default Backup User account been deleted? >> >> The Backup Configuration Wizard ends and you receive an "Unspecified >> error" error message in Small Business Server 2003 >> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;886297 >> > > The username exists but I can't swap it to another as I get the same error > picking select a new tape changer from the menu. From: Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] on 15 Jul 2010 16:53 IIRC, the Backup User account will have a red circle with white X during normal non-backup times. It is only activated when the SBS Backup Wizard is configured and the scheduled backup tasks is called. -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Annon" <Annon(a)spameater.yum.yum> wrote in message news:OQoCb2FJLHA.5408(a)TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" <mwport(a)no_spam_hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:%23zE1CeFJLHA.5720(a)TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> Has the default Backup User account been deleted? > > Just re-read that , checked the Backup User account (rather than the tape > changer account) and yes - the account seems to have been disabled. Appreciate you spending the time to help. The exact error message is "Unspecified Error" and just an OK button. the dialog title bar say "Windows Internet Explorer". I also note the monitoring and reporting gives "MMC could not create the snap-in." if that could be related? No criticals in either the application or system event logs. SP1 setup tells me there was an error and to check the log file - contents below ================================================ [Setup run at 21:45:54 on 07/15/10] Component Name: Microsoft Search Version: 2.0 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Server Configuration Version: NA Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Windows Server 2003 Configuration Version: 5.2 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Domain Configuration Version: 5.2 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Networking Configuration Version: 5.2 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Network Identification Version: 5.2 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Internet Information Services (IIS) Version: 5.2 Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA Component Name: Windows Small Business Server 2003 Version: Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA

I'm thinking your initial thought about SP1 not allowing reinstall is the problem. What error do you get when you try to reinstall SBS 2003 SP1? -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Annon" <Annon(a)spameater.yum.yum> wrote in message news:uYklvKGJLHA.4756(a)TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" <mwport(a)no_spam_hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:OQSd03FJLHA.4320(a)TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >> What is the exact text of the error you're getting when you try to open >> the Backup console? >> Are there any errors in the event logs? > > Appreciate you spending the time to help. > > > The exact error message is "Unspecified Error" and just an OK button. the > dialog title bar say "Windows Internet Explorer". > > I also note the monitoring and reporting gives "MMC could not create the > snap-in." if that could be related? > > No criticals in either the application or system event logs. > > SP1 setup tells me there was an error and to check the log file - contents > below > ================================================ > > [Setup run at 21:45:54 on 07/15/10] > Component Name: Microsoft Search > Version: 2.0 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Server Configuration > Version: NA > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Windows Server 2003 Configuration > Version: 5.2 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Domain Configuration > Version: 5.2 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Networking Configuration > Version: 5.2 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Network Identification > Version: 5.2 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Internet Information Services (IIS) > Version: 5.2 > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > > Component Name: Windows Small Business Server 2003 > Version: > Installation Status: Success > Error Message: NA > |
