Next: sbs 2008 prem and SQL on one server
From: Drew on 18 May 2010 05:32 Hi I am looking to buy Win 2008 Server (64) to add to SBS 2003 Prem network, as a member application server and backup DC. Am I right in thinking that the SBS user CALs also cover the users access to Win 2008 Server? Secondly, the database app to be used on the Win 2008 server, can use SQL Server 2008 Express. But does the SBS 2003 Prem user CALs cover usage of any other full versions of SQL, on the Win 2008 Server? -- Many Thanks Drew
From: Cliff Galiher - MVP on 18 May 2010 06:31 Your SBS CALs only allow access to components equal to the version that match the product. There was a brief grace period, but it has passed. From the SBS Licensing FAQ: --------------- Q. I am currently a SBS 2003 R2 customer and have added a Windows Server 2008 to my SBS domain. Do I have to purchase Windows Server 2008 CALs to be in compliance with my license? A. No. Due to the difference in timing of the release of SBS 2008 and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has made an exception to the license requirements. If you have a Windows Server 2008 in the SBS 2003 R2 domain, your SBS 2003 R2 CALs are applicable until May 31, 2009, after which you will be required to either have Windows Server 2008 CALs or SBS 2008 CALs to be in compliance with your license. --------------- As you can see, May 31st 2009 was the sunset on that offer and it has long since passed. You will need CALs for Windows Server. Although SQL is not addressed in this Q&A, it is my understanding that similar restrictions apply. As an aside, I do not recommend running applications on domain controllers (you mentioned that the second server would be both.) Every application installed on a server (domain controller or otherwise) increases the attack surface of that server. If a vulnerability were discovered on such an app, the risk to your network health is far greater when the exploit exists on a DC. It is a risk best avoided. -Cliff "Drew" <Drew(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4C69BBEE-5FEB-4DF1-8E0E-D3F91651063E(a)microsoft.com... > Hi > I am looking to buy Win 2008 Server (64) to add to SBS 2003 Prem network, > as > a member application server and backup DC. > > Am I right in thinking that the SBS user CALs also cover the users access > to > Win 2008 Server? > > Secondly, the database app to be used on the Win 2008 server, can use SQL > Server 2008 Express. From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on 18 May 2010 07:09 I do not pretend to be a SQL expert, or even a novice. But my (very) rudementary understanding is that SQL will support multiple "tables" or "databases" or what ever one calls them. Since the second Windows Server that came with SBS Premium is (or can be) 64 and since you already have a second copy of Windows server and the SQL CALs, are you sure you need a new box for a new app? Perhaps just beefing up the SBS Server #2 would be sufficient. - Larry Please post the resolution to your issue so others may benefit - Get Your SBS Health Check at www.sbsbpa.com > Hi > I am looking to buy Win 2008 Server (64) to add to SBS 2003 Prem > network, as > a member application server and backup DC. > Am I right in thinking that the SBS user CALs also cover the users > access to Win 2008 Server? > > Secondly, the database app to be used on the Win 2008 server, can use > SQL Server 2008 Express.
