Just had a call from someone with an SBS 2008 server.

They have got no disk redundancy, they had two disks and they installed the
OS onto one and used the other for the data.

Their second data disk E:\ ,which he tells me they moved their exchange
databases onto, has failed.

He's replaced the disk and the server boots up OK, but of course Exchange
2007 isn't working.

He has a backup of the information stores but he's having difficulty
restoring them.

Does he have to get new empty databases setup in Exchange 2007 in order to
overwrite them with his restore ?

At the moment he says he's just got an empty E:\ drive/partition.

Are you saying he can't simply restore the backup of his old E: drive
to the new E: drive? Shut the Exchange services down while trying to
restore it.

Hello Jim,

Thanks for your post and Ace's input.

For your reference, here is an article about restoring Exchange 2007 information store database, in case you need:

How to Perform a Basic Restore of Exchange Databases
Applies to: Exchange Server 2007 SP3, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996859(EXCHG.80).aspx

In addition, is your Exchange server 2007 has applied Service Pack 2? If so, you may use the below article to restore:

How to Restore a Backup of Exchange Using Windows Server Backup
Applies to: This procedure can only be performed locally on a computer running Exchange 2007 SP2 on Windows Server 2008.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee221167(EXCHG.80).aspx

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

If they are using the SBS2008 backup just restore the exchange.
it should work restoring the complete volume even.

If not you will have to create a NEW exchange store
and let email push up (assuming they are in cached mode.)

then have them fix the server correctly of course :)
and move things where they should be "RAID etc."

Sorry folks, haven't seen him for a bit.

He's resolved it, basically let Exchange create a new empty database and
then set that for being overwritten and then restored from his backup.
