From: noxcuses on 11 Dec 2009 14:33 Since SBS 2008 doesn't include ISA server, I need to purchase a small business router/firewall for my network. I'm looking for a simple yet reliable router that will work with the Plug n Play router setup in SBS2008. Any suggestions on a good router?

Well, you can make your requirements simpler - you should never use plug'n'pray for your firewall/router/network equipment. Always configure it manually yourself. I would invest in a decent SonicWALL or Watchguard or comparable piece of hardware. The consumer grade kit doesn't have a lot of features or logging.
From: Cris Hanna [SBS - MVP] on 11 Dec 2009 15:19 Completely agree. And not all UPnP is the same. Several reports here of the wizard not working with routers that are listed as UPnP In addition to the others, consider the Calyptix Access Enforcer which also included AV, Anti Malware, Content Management, Web Filtering and great reporting tools and integrates with AD. -- Cris Hanna [SBS - MVP] (since 1997) Co-Contributor, Windows Small Business Server 2008 Unleashed http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Small-Business-Server-Unleashed/dp/0672329573/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217269967&sr=8-1 Owner, CPU Services, Belleville, IL A Microsoft Registered Partner ------------------------------------ MVPs do not work for Microsoft Please do not submit questions directly to me. Take a look at the WatchGuard x550e series with UTM services for Web Blocking and Spam Filtering and Web/SMTP AV filtering. If you value your network devices you won't purchase a crappy NAT Router and pretend it's a firewall. -- You can't trust your best friends, your five senses, only the little voice inside you that most civilians don't even hear -- Listen to that. In addition to those already suggested you could consider pfsense, an open source firewall/ router which began as a fork of monowall. It can be run on generic PC hardware or on low power hadware such as the Alix2 from PC Engines. We use pfsense embedded in production on one of the Alix 2 machines and have found it rock solid, feature rich and easy to configure via the web interface. The Alix machine is tiny, silent and uses very little power. Commercial support is available for pfsense but the community forums have answered most of my questions quickly. There is also a new book which has been well recieved but my copy has not arrived yet. Disclaimer: I am not employed by or affiliated with pfsense or PC Engines, I am just very happy with their products :) Regards, Simon.
