Question: How satisfied have you been with Redirected Folders instead of
Roaming Profile?

- Not happy with Redirected folders at all in my experience
- More or less the same as Roaming Profile in my experience
- Found it much more flexible and useful compared to Roaming Profile
- I prefer another method of having a copy of workstation/laptop data
------------------------------------------------------------------------

::Hello,::

::Im sure many others have been looking for the same answer therefore
hope that someone can shine some light on the matter for us all.::

::We have a scenario at the moment where the SBS2008 has been setup, all
working accordingly however there are three laptop/notebook users who
also have Redirected Folders setup for Documents and Desktop with the
server which seems to be working fine however few questions:::

::1.:: ::When users take their laptops away the files are still
accessible however there is nothing in profile when you browse it, where
are the local cached/offline files and folders for Redirected Folders?::
::2.:: ::One user has been working away from the network for couple of
weeks therefore not synchronised with server and his system has now
crashed therefore is the local cached/offline data accessible to be
backed up?::
::3.:: ::We found major issues when we added AppData to the Redirected
Folders; are there any issues with Favourites if added to Redirected
Folders?::

::I look forward to a helpful answer for above, especially the first two
:)::

::Regards::

::I believe I may have allocated the answer to my own first and second
question also possibly the third...::
:: ::
::My colleague did some research and found that in Vista the Redirected
Folders offline/cached files are held in a locked folder within
C:\Windows\CSC however Microsoft have not made getting into this folder
that simple, you need to take ownership of each folder, subfolder and
every item within them, in our case we had to do each at a time which
was a painful process however finally got the files backed up, I guess
if you use Linux the permissions/security will be ignored altogether.::
:: ::
::Based on this finding I don’t believe there will be any issue
with also adding Favourites to the Redirected Folders via the relevant
GPO (do not add new GPO that does same thing, we’ve tested this
and Vista really does not like that and started causing various issues
on login and logout) however one question remains; Why didn’t
Microsoft add this option to the Redirected Folders options menu via
Windows SBS Console? Maybe they know something we don’t? Because
when you adjust the Redirected Folders GPO for anything else and change
any of the options via Windows SBS Console it resets to default again
therefore this question still remains to be confirmed.::
:: ::
::Anyway I hope this info helps others.::

One thing I like about REDIRECTED folders is that there is nothing for a
local admin to see in the local computers documents/settings folder for
other users.

This makes the solution a lot more secure than under previous methods.
