That model is listed as supported by a non-free app called vuescan which I have
used and found to be very good. It's available for all 3 major platforms.

I'd avoid complicating things if at all possible. A cheap'n'cheerful SCSI card
like an Adaptec 2906 can be found on Ebay for about UK10 and I have used this
(a long time ago mind) to connect my old Nikon Coolscan III and run that with
vuescan on Linux. You will of course need the correct cables so it's worth doing
some research before you buy...

I do not have a scanner, but I do have an SCSI cd-rom burner. Instead
of looking for an adapter, I just stuck a SCSI controller in the
computer. Thus it does not interfere with anything else, as it is the
only device on the SCSI controller.

How lucky for you. However, I think it has been established that the
PC in question is a laptop, so that is probably not an option for him.

step 1) put scanner on ebay although a scanner from the scsi era is
probably worthless. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a 3 pass scanner
outperformed by a any scanner equal in price to a usb->scsi interface.

step 2) buy usb scanner
