See this link about formating SDHC cards to FAT16 or 'FAT' as opposed to 'FAT32'

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/216666/2212312.aspx#2212312

I have used a 4GB SDHC card in a RNS-310 sat-nav - music system. The RNS recognises $ gb capacity on the card (only when it was formated in FAT16 or 'FAT' it was not recognised when formated as NTFS or FAT32

Strange - FAT16 has always been supported, from WinCE 1.0. I've never had
any WinCE, PsPC and, later, PPC that would not support cards formatted to
FAT16 .

Hi all,

I would like to format 8GB SDHC card to FAT16 file system so that it
will play in my car. Is this possible? If so, how?

Thanks in advance,

But you're right, if you have a SDHC card with a Fat32 file system and
your PPC can't read it, it's likely because the PPC doesn't support
SDHC.

Actually the OP didn't seem concerned about FAT32. He was asking about FAT16
to allow compatibility with a car stereo. I imagine that means the car
stereo takes SD cards, but only reads FAT16? First I'm not sure FAT16
supports 8G...does it? Second, I would guess that a stereo that only
supports FAT16, wouldn't support SDHC. It's fairly new. newer than FAT32,
and way newer than FAT16. Third, if the stereo actually supports an
external USB drive, and that is the connection approach, it wouldn't matter
what file system is on the Touch, only that it can be configured as a USB
drive. Don't know if it can or not, but it would be unusual if it could.
Most WM devices can't.

It doesn't - see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table#Final_FAT16

The maximal partition size it supports is 2G.

Earlier(!) PPC / Smartphone models indeed don't officially support SDHC.
However, many of these earlier models have received unofficial (XDA-Dev)
SDHC patches.

I am aware that the FAT16 file system generally only supports disks up
to a maximum of 2GB.

Does a formatting utility exist which allows a FAT16 format on larger
disks? Or is there some kind of hack for the standard Window/DOS
utilities?

Is it possible to partition an SDHC card so that a 2GB partition can
be created and thereafter formatted in FAT16?

Is it possible to compress the disk so that it is only 2GB in size?

Is there any way on God's earth that my SDHC card can be formatted to
FAT16?

Thanks in advance,

Rype

The only way of sing it is creating a 2G partition on it and using it. Is
your player able to handle multiple partitions on a card? If it isn't, then,
you will only have access to the first 2G one.

There are still some sd devices around which only know about fat16... I
have one gps as an example plus have run into a few other devices over
the past few years so I think this is Rype's blockade.

Windows (on the desktop) maintains both fat16 and fat32 tables on
cards... not sure about the current state of windows mobile, but the
early versions only created fat32 entries on the ppc... i.e. a memory
card's "My Documents" folder created on a ppc would not appear in a dos
command window when the card was accessed via a windows pc using a card
reader.

y'know... the stuff that keeps us on our toes ;-)

You seem adamant that you MUST do this. I understand the lure

But you're only attacking one end of the problem.
How do you know that your car device can play a NON-STANDARD
format card? Does it support SDHC at all?

Sometimes scaling back your expectations is the rational thing to do.
If you drive 24 hours a day and use a 2gig card, you'd
have the annoyance of swapping cards every day and a third.
If you don't drive for a living, 2gig can last a very long time.

Yep... assume you know my comments were with respect to FAT16... seems
that it is currently supported but in the early PPC days, it was not...
only FAT32 entries were made and maintained on the PPC

Just stuck my SD (which has been in use from early 2002 to 2003se) into
the ppc card reader and ran a

DIR /X

....which shows a number of entries without 8.3 names.

What is the capacity shown when you format in FAT or FAT16?

It has been my understanding that FAT would be limited to a max of 2GB
