I think Tom had it right when he posted about the /.Trashes folders.
There are also .Trashes folders on external hard drives, that Secure
Empty seems to go after (and report).

I get "three items to delete" when Secure Emptying a single file from
the Trash. When I attach a FireWire volume, that number goes up to
five. The number seems to go up by two for every external drive I
attach; plugging in all three results in nine items to secure delete.

This wouldn't have anything to do with "journaling" would it? I don't
really understand journaling at any deep level, except that you're
supposed to turn it off to optimize media capture.

Yep. You can fit a hex number into a smaller space than a decimal
number, thus hex numbers are denser.
