From: Michael on 21 Apr 2010 19:03 Well, Betty, seeing the wealth of information you gave about your OS, which updates are failing, and any verbatim error messages, the only help that can be offered to you is our local mind reader/soothsayer, but he'll be out of this solar system for the next 50 years. My psychic powers are running low. - What operating system are you running? - 32-bit or 64-bit? - Service Pack level of said installed operating system? - What specific updates are failing to install (KB######)? - What is the supposed error code you receive? - What version of Internet Explorer are you running? - What version (if any) of Microsoft Office is installed? - What antivirus software do you utilize? - What antimalware software do you/have you utilized? - Do you run any third party software firewall? That's the short version.. here's the more detailed one... Start button --> RUN (no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard) --> type in: winver --> Click OK. The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general (Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the word "version" will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this message verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure character-for-character copying. That's the edition (in the top picture) and the exact version number in detail (the 'version' line.) What version of Internet Explorer are you currently using? Easy to find out. Open Internet Explorer and while that is in-focus, press and hold the "ALT" key on your keyboard. With the "ALT" key still pressed, press (just once, no holding) the "H" key. Now, with the "ALT" key still pressed, press (just once, no holding) the "A" key. That will bring up the "About Internet Explorer" window. It will give you the exact version you are using - repeat what you see there in response to this message. How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218 What AntiVirus application are you using? (Name and exact version, please.) - Was any flavor of "Norton" products ever installed? - Was any flavor of "McAfee" products ever installed? Do you have a third party firewall - or are you using the built-in Windows firewall? (ZoneAlarm or part of some all-in-one suite you have installed?) Do you ever run any antimalware applications? If so - which ones and when did you scan with them last (full scan, not quick)? (Things like SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.) What version (if any) of Microsoft Office are you running? XP, 2003, 2007? What specific updates are failing to install? You should be getting a list of KB######'s - what are these you get? What is the supposed error code you receive? Try to copy it word-for-word (character-by-character for the parts that usually start "0x"...) From: Ǝиçεl on 21 Apr 2010 19:20 Hello Elizabeth, What error(s) do you get ? Other than the error code...what is the exact messsage (verbatim, which means word-for-word) you are receiving when you try to download and install this update? What updates ? Please state your exact Windows version (plus Service Pack version installed) what version of Internet Explorer? and perhaps what other antivirus or antimalware software you may have installed, Security suite and is a 3rd party firewall being used ?, etc. etc. . http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 Please do so in your next reply Further information required: How to view the Update log in Windows Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log and then click OK. Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. Start at the bottom and work your way up to a section that shows an ERROR, WARNING, or FATAL. If appropriate copy and paste the error codes into this thread along with 30 or so *preceding* lines into your reply, so someone may be able to assist you. Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie (KB977914) and post the contents of the failed update. This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.
