From: AES on 13 May 2010 11:29 I read news at Stanford University on a MacBook (OS 10.4.11) using the latest version of MT-NewsWatcher. Stanford has long had a news server named nntp.stanford.edu; but the IT powers that be for some arcane reason recently set up a new server named news.stanford.edu and said we should use that. The new name is the only one that will respond to a Windows >> Show Full Group List menu command in MTNW. I recently began to believe that some of my postings to various groups were not getting through, and wondering why this might be, took a look at the menu command Special >> News Servers. The Server Options Tab in the resulting dialog box shows two servers in the left hand column: "news.stanford.edu", which has settings Server Name = nntp.stanford.edu and Port = 563, and is checked "nntp.stanford.edu", which also has Server Name = nntp.stanford.edu but has Port = 119, and is not checked It looks like the first server options definition (the one I'm using) is maybe miscoded, and should be Server Name = news.stanford.edu ?? But, when I changed that definition to "news.stanford.edu" and closed the dialog box, this instantly froze MT-NewsWatcher, in the sense that absolutely *every* menu command, including the Quit command, was grayed out, and all I could do was Force Quit MTNW. And when I re-opened it, this setting remained unchanged. I'm talking to the Stanford IT people about what these settings should be -- but what about this freeze? Is it some kind of long hidden glitch in MTNW?

Based on what you've said, yes. The entry in the left-hand column is just a name, and could be anything. You could call the server "Bob" if you wanted and it would work if the server details are correct. > But, when I changed that definition to "news.stanford.edu" and closed > the dialog box, this instantly froze MT-NewsWatcher, in the sense that > absolutely *every* menu command, including the Quit command, was grayed > out, and all I could do was Force Quit MTNW. I'd just try again, for starters, sometimes crashes just happen for obscure reasons. -- Tom "Tom" Harrington Independent Mac OS X developer since 2002 http://www.atomicbird.com/
