From: Steve on 8 Apr 2010 14:48 HI, I've read that Microsoft doesn't recommend syncing the DC with an external source but if the internal clock on a server loses a few minutes per week wouldn't that be an alternative. From my reading it looks like the only way to set up a DC to sync with an NTP server is by editing the registry. Is there a simpler way. Can I get some input on this? Thanks Steve

From: Steve on 8 Apr 2010 23:00 Hi Johnthan, Actually I'm looking for an answer to my question and that is do I have to edit the registry or is there an easier GUI way. The documents that you call out are ones that I have read and although I could follow them I am surprised that Microsoft didn't have an easier way. By the way, in the second document that your refer to ( http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/816042) it states that Microsoft recommends a hardware source over an Internet source and that is the same document that caused me to make the statement. Also, I have read other documents on the net that mention what Microsoft recommends but on the other hand I'm aware that many time source servers do sync with an NTP server. Is there an easier way? Thanks Steve "Jonathan de Boyne Pollard" <J.deBoynePollard-newsgroups(a)NTLWorld.COM> wrote in message news:IU.D20100408.T195434.P1905.Q0(a)J.de.Boyne.Pollard.localhost... From: Meinolf Weber [MVP-DS] on 9 Apr 2010 01:38 Hello Steve, This command run on the DC with the PDCEmulator FSMO: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:PEERS /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update With "PEERS" you can set the time source, either DNS name (time.windows.com) or an ip address from a reliable time source. There's an example of using such a tool right there in the MSKB article. Read this. Or just look the command up in the Windows Help.
