I just upgraded from WSS v2 to v3. Everything went surprisingly smooth
except I still can't get Windows SharePoint Services Search Service
working. The service itself will start just fine, but I receive an
error message when I submit the configuration page under central
administration.

The error reads:
"Error
This server is not the indexer of this search application.
Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services."

It takes about 45 seconds after I submit the page for the error to pop
up, during that time it creates the search DB in SQL Server 2005 and
fills it with typical configuration information.

I checked the logs in Event Viewer -> Application and found this error
event:
"This server is not the indexer of this search application (the
assigned indexer is '10.0.0.1')."

Any help would be most appreciated.

Here's some more background:

Server config:
Windows 2003 Standard Edition sp1
Active Directory Domain Controller
MS SQL Server 2005
Primary IP address: 10.0.0.1
Net bios name: BOX374

Error message is the same when performing a clean install of WSS 3 or
after an upgrade from WSS 2.

Service account is: MYDOMAIN\Sharepoint.service (member of Domain Users
and WSS_WPG)
Content account is: MYDOMAIN\Sharepoint.content (member of Domain
Users)

Extracts from the Sharepoint logs at:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\12\LOGS
