If you run msconfig and start experimenting by deselecting programs that normally start with the computer and then restart and see if the computer will shut down automatically without doing it manually you should be able to eventually isolate the culprit program. Once you find the program that's causing the problem try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it to see if the issue goes away. And if not try going to the publisher's website to see if there is either a patch or a newer version of the program may be available. -- Jan Alter bearpuf(a)verizon.net

If you click the "+" next to the word "Computer", is one of the words in the thing below computer "ACPI" ? If so, that helps with the soft-off function. If it says something like "Standard PC", then you may end up seeing the equivalent of the old Win98 "it is safe to turn off this computer" kind of message. If it takes a long time, from selecting "Shutdown" in Windows, until the power goes off, then get a copy of "UPHClean" from Microsoft and install that. That helps release registry hives that are still open for some reason. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&DisplayLang=en Paul
