I had similar problems (AMD Athlon Dual Core and Nvidia drivers). Have a
look at this post on Nvidia Linux forums

Adding idle=poll and/or maxcpus=1 to kernel parameters cured my problem

Phil,
It appears that adding the kernel parameters you suggested fixed my
