Often when I am running Matlab, it freezes for a couple of minutes. I
can't enter commands and the various Matlab windows (figures, desktop,
etc) either go blank or contain 'screenshots' of whatever is on my
Windows desktop. After several minutes, Matlab refreshes its windows
and I can enter commands again. This occurs when I am doing simple
tasks such as making a line plot or editing an mfile. I am running
R2010a on Windows XP; we have a slow internet connection but I have
several drives mounted on my Matlab path. Any idea why Matlab is
freezing?

Its possible that the memory is full, and somehow MATLAB wound up being relegated to the page file memory?

Try seeing the memory consumption stats while you're running MATLAB.

I don't see anything odd in the output of 'memory'. Is there another
way to check?
Maximum possible array: 513 MB (5.376e+008 bytes) *
Memory available for all arrays: 1218 MB (1.277e+009 bytes) **
Memory used by MATLAB: 488 MB (5.117e+008 bytes)
Physical Memory (RAM): 3572 MB (3.745e+009 bytes)

* Limited by contiguous virtual address space available.

I recently updated my lab computer to R2010a from R2009a (WinXP) recently and I'm experiencing the same issues. After rebooting my machine, starting Matlab and running minor GUIs (which I used to be able to run for hours and hours on 2009a) after a few minutes Matlab bogs down.

I've seen Matlab freeze for a few minutes (Matlab on Windows, license on LINUX server) when it is having trouble connecting (talking) to the license server - could this be your problem?
