Ah, okay, I understand what you're doing now. I think the short answer
is that using the real server means that you are not using OWA but the
MS proprietary protocol.[1]

Unless they are two completely different protocols as I suspect.

Regardless, it looks like you've had it until the relevant upgrades get
applied. Can you "chain sync" messages from Exchange to the iPhone and
then on to the Mac as a stop-gap?

From what I can tell, MS have allowed Apple to use ActiveSync on the
iPhone, but won't allow it on desktops / laptops.

Will be interesting to see how this applies to the iTablet if it ever
appears.

I could, but it's a bit pointless. If the iPhone pings for a message,
I'll just log onto webmail if I need to see a full-screen message / view
or edit an attachment.

That's strange - neither Exchange system I use produce anything useful
like that in the long headers .

I discovered that telnetting to port 110 (POP3) gives some useful
information.
