OK, I found the problem. Go to yast/hardware/sound/other/volume and set
all the controls that are at 100% to 50%. The garble is an overdriven
preamp.

Or use "alsamixer" - when you're using alsa, not pulseaudio - and set
all of the sliders at the top of the GREEN bar, not in the RED part.
That is mostly about 70 to 75%
