I've got a G4 Cube ([waves at Zoara]) into which I've plugged a pair of
cheap USB speakers (the Cube not having a 3.5mm speaker socket). Trouble
is, they're too loud. *WAY* too loud. If I crank the master volume
control in the Sound prefs to zero, then nudge it up by a very small
amount, it's ok. Just. But this doesn't give me very fine control.

Does anyone know of a way to tell the system to lock the actual max.
volume to a predetermined amount (about 5% in this case). I thought the
Audio MIDI app might let me do that but sadly it doesn't.

Are you running the speakers from a USB port on the base of the Cube?
These are high powered ports and deliver 20 watts so that may be the
problem.

I have the ball speakers and inline digital amp with mine which splits
the power into 10 watt channels. So maybe getting speakers that handle
more power would work or at least speakers with their own volume
control.

Have a browse around http://www.cubeowner.com/forums - there are still
folk posting there.
