Hello,

I have a usb external hdd always connected to my IMac 21" OSX 6.

The problem is that Spotlight loose the search index of the device. I
have to de-connect and connect again everytime so the index is ok, but
only until next reboot.

I tried to rebuild the index with Onyx and putting in and out in
spootlight "privacy" tab, but didn'd work.

Can please someone suggest a way to solve the problem ?

thank you so much

It sounds like it isn't being unmounted properly, but it is hard to say.

When you reconnect the drive, what is logged? You need to use
Console.app to see this, or look at /var/log/system.log.

It could be that the index file is corrupted. Download spotless
(shareware) to examine and fix.

If you want a free way to examine the index status using the terminal, type:

mdutil -sav

(and return). It'll output something like:

/:
Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2010-03-12 06:56:24 +0000 (796738 seconds ago),
reasoning: 'scan not required - avoided catchup scan'
/Volumes/FreeAgent:
Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2010-03-21 12:10:00 +0000 (322 seconds ago),
reasoning: 'scan not required - avoided catchup scan'
/Volumes/FreeAgent/Backups.backupdb:
Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2010-03-21 12:10:00 +0000 (322 seconds ago),
reasoning: 'scan not required - avoided catchup scan'

FreeAgent's my Time Machine disk. The index names are the unindented
lines with a colon after.

If you want a free way to erase (and cause a rebuild) of an index, do:

sudo mdutil -E "<type index name here>"

eg:

sudo mdutil -E "/Volumes/FreeAgent"

sudo will prompt for your password.
