Quick update. Mrs H took my Prius today, as her car was in for an MOT. I took the old Alfa, in which I've fitted a Kenwood Bluetooth / iPod head unit. Couldn't plug the iPhone into the head unit and get it to play nicely with Spotify, so tried Bluetooth streaming, which worked very nicely. Not sure if I need to stop buying music yet. It would be nice if it had a recommendation engine as well.

I mean playlists sync and tracks also appear on the iphone but are greyed out. It seems that you need to download them twice - once on the desktop & once on the iphone via wifi if you want them to be available offline. Or am I missing something?

You never download anything to the desktop - it's all streamed. If this is set on the desktop client I can't see a way to sync the downloaded tracks to the iPhone.
