I'm doing a lot of video with iMovie with a Mac Pro(OSX 10.6.2) , lots
of files being transferred from one HD to the other in reason of their
size, Well, the usual stuff. Suddenly I realise that on all disks
windows, appears ,on the right of the "view" icons a dimmed question
mark. When I click on it; it displays the name of a file ("bud
01-07-09", without extension) , and a warning window saying "this item
is missing"
Well I perhaps thrashed a file by that name, but I have still a "bud
01-07-09.mov " video file on one volume and a "bud 01-07-09.rcproject"
on another one.
This is not , of course, the first time I thrash files and this is the
first time I see this question mark. Although it does no harm, i'd like
to get rid of it, and understand what's going on.
Could somebody help me ? Thanks in advance

Can you upload a screen shot (Command-Shift-3 or 4) to
http://imageshack.us (or similar) so we can see it?

What do you mean by "thrash files" exactly?

Are all of the effected files on the same disk? If so, try unmounting
and re-mounting the disk.

Sorry I meant "trash" . Sorry also for not sending the screen shot : It
weighs more than 2 MB and my News provider does not allow more than 1MB.
The pretended missing item is on different volumes, all show the same
Question mark if i click over them. I must add that I rebuilt the
directory of the boot disk with DiskWarrior with no change in the
phenomenon. I shall now search if some app like iTunes is not holding a
reference to a missing item, that is with a different extension that the
existing ones.

I asked you to upload a screen shot to http://imageshack.us and provide
a *link* to it in your post.

I gather you are referring to the toolbar at the top of each Finder
window.

What probably happened is that at some point you accidentally dragged a
file into the toolbar area (which adds its icon into the toolbar, so it
can be quickly accessed from any open Finder window), and subsequently
deleted the original file. Finder continues to show the icon as a
question mark in this case.

You can remove that icon from the toolbar by holding down the Command
key and dragging it off the toolbar.
