I'd suggest doing a long listing of the specific device you're using.

On my Debian box at work, I get:

brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 3, 0 2010-05-04 17:11 /dev/hda
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 3, 64 2010-05-04 17:11 /dev/hdb
