If I run it manually, the same thing happens - the report does not
appear and there are no errors. If I insert an incorrect parameter, I
get an error which suggests that the report is running (when the
parameters are properly entered) but simply not appearing.

This is important. This is not a subreport problem. It is a report problem.
You need to get this working standalone. Something is wrong with your
report. Focus on the report you want to use as a subreport.
