Don't fiddle on that level any more - pointless from my point of view, and back when I did do that sort of thing, it turned around and bit me on the bum a few times. Why waste time doing things like that? That's my line. <shrug> The big space users these days are video and music files, aren't they? 1.9GB is less than 1 DVD rip. And it's the space taken up by 3 or 4 CDs. It is a lot bigger than a MB. Umm. Yeah, I keep hitting the wrong button. I've just thrown away quite a few GB from my 1TB HDD. I've got hundreds of GB free. And there are always risks that something'll go wrong when you do things like that. And it's not just machine time! You have to tell the machine to do the job, and then you spend time checking what it's done, and has it done it properly, and so on. > > That's my line. <shrug> The > > big space users these days are video and music files, aren't they? > > Maybe. If and only if you're running out of HD space and if and only if you have another 1.9GB of music you really want to put on it. btw, ~10GB is ~1.3 days worth of music in ALC format (so sez my chamber music playlist). Seems to me that you're wanting to use your laptop as your music store and you really shouldn't be thinking of doing that unless it's got a really really big HDD. The 1TB I've got in my iMac's a suitable size for sticking yer music collection on. > > Not a lot of space, y'know? > > Still is a fairly large amount of space on a laptop drive. Hmm - 250GB-500GB HD sizes on the current MacBook range, so it seems. So 1.9GB does show up. Then again, it does on my 1TB HDD... > > > > Once upon a time, I used to put my apps on a diet and strip out the code > > > > that made it fat - back in the days of the 68k/PPC transition. > > > > > > > > But there stopped being any need for that many many years ago, when HDDs > > > > got a bit bigger. > > > > > > My hard disk hasn't got any bigger recently. > > > > Mine keep growing - but that's because Macs are unreliable and I've had > > to replace mine too often. > > Mine aren't any more unreliable than they used to be. All the PPC Macs we bought new died in service, mostly just out of warranty. All of them, no exceptions. We've got a lot of working 68k Macs. <shrug> > > > > I don't understand why anyone would feel it'd help to strip out a mere > > > > 1.9MB of data from a modern PC's HDD. > > > > > > GB. All of them, no exceptions. We've got a lot of working 68k > Macs. I have a lot of working PPC macs. Actually i don't any more as I sold a few, but my Powermac G4/400 is still working (not with me). My G4/1.25DP is still working a few weeks ago when I switched it on to test java stuff on, my old powerbook G4/500 is still working as I believe (last time I heard) was the 800 (JamesB old laptop). The only trouble I have had is power supplies. I have had my music stored on many computers, and very few of them have 1TB. Only now my iMac has 1TB and my PC has 2TB. -- Woody

Hmm? You need to count your minutes more carefully, you do. > > And it's not just machine time! Where to download, what it does, what the consequences are, doing the backup before doing the job, and so on. Lots human time involved. > And what time to I need to spend to find out if it worked? it either did > or it didn't, there is no point me spending time finding out if it did. There's not a lot of advantage in using lossily compressed audio if you ask me - 320 kbit/s is only about 1/3-1/2 the data rate of losslessly compressed audio, so why bother? (okay, for BBC R4 programmes, 128kbit/s really is fine. Speech is one thing; music is another) > > Seems to me that you're wanting to use your laptop as your music store > > and you really shouldn't be thinking of doing that unless it's got a > > really really big HDD. > > Why? Its my laptop, I want all my music on it (or a sizeable subset) as > I want to sync it with my iPod. If you want all your music on it (and I assume that means losslessly compressed, being the only sane way to do it), you need a HDD big enough. And you need the HDD big enough for all the music and all of everything else. And that means something a bit more than 320GB, I'd've thought. <shrug> [snip] > > > > I've just thrown away quite a few GB from my 1TB HDD.
