From: T i m on 23 Apr 2010 08:32 Hi all, In case I might be a non starter (for any reason) I wonder if anyone knows if you should be able to tether (I think that's the right term) a Windows / Ubuntu laptop to a Samsung GT-B2100 (on Voda 25 contract) please? I'm guessing if it is possible (technically) it might be better via a USB cable as BT is another layer of complexity? Assuming we get that far, then there is the matter if Voda allow such a thing. I believe he (daughters / bf) has a 500M/m data allowance if that helps. The hope is that he could use it if their broadband goes down (it happens quite a bit where they are in Scotland) or for say updating his online calendar or a bit of email / IM when out and about. Failing that I guess he would have to get a PAYG MBB dongle. [1] Cheers, T i m p.s. He's also got an iPhone Touch (with calendars, IM and email) if that offers any alternative possibilities. [1] I have just been (successfully) experimenting with my Voda PAYG dongle on a 5m USB-Hub lead with the thought of him using similar if required and remoting outside on a suitable pole and waterproofed in the hope to get a better signal (marginal mobile coverage indoors).

I found I had a USB cable left over from daughters Samsungs, that it needed the Samsung suite to get the drivers and Vodafones connect software to make the connection and we are online. ;-) So, is the usage ok do we know (for sure please) or might he get a big bill if he doesn't just use the net directly from the phone? I said I would ask here rather than in a Voda shop because some questions are best unasked (officially). ;-) Cheers, T i m

As per the reply I've just posted in another thread, I use tethering on Voda without any objections from them. <ivadneGbnJ2hGEfWnZ2dnUVZ8hWdnZ2d(a)brightview.co.uk> Of course, that answer has no official capacity and I certainly can't /guarantee/ that they wouldn't bother you. -- |Bob Pullen Broadband Solutions for |Support Home & Business @ |Plusnet Plc. www.plus.net +--------------- twitter.com/plusnet ----------------
