I should have looked harder or tried different search terms. Anyway, I
found this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1347

"Saves and manages frequently-entered text for later pasting into Web page
forms in Firefox or email and newsgroup messages in Thunderbird. Pasting a
clipping is accomplished with just two mouse clicks, eliminating the hassle
of retyping or repetitive copying and pasting.

Features:

* Create clippings from selected text in a form field or Web page body
(Firefox), or from selected text in an email or newsgroup message
(Thunderbird)
* Create clippings by dragging and dropping text into the Clippings icon on
the status bar
* Paste clippings into form fields (Firefox) or new email or newsgroup
messages (Thunderbird) from the Clippings context menu. Individual clippings
can be pasted as rich text if they contain HTML tags.
* Assign shortcut keys to clippings for quicker pasting
* Define placeholders inside a clipping that you will be prompted to fill in
when you paste the clipping. Built-in placeholders for the date, time,
clipping name, user agent, etc. are also available.
* Organize your collection of clippings into folders using Clippings Manager
* Import and export clippings to or from datasource files to share with
other users"

More than I need but still a good find IMO. Thanks for your suggestions.

If you wish to retain references for citation and maybe even want to
create a local archive of relevant pages, a bibliographic software
like Zotero may also be worth a try:

http://www.zotero.org

Archiving of text snippets is explained in the "Notes" section of the
documentation and not in the part "Getting Stuff Into Your Library":

*Grabbing Text From Webpages:*
| Because new research often incorporates pre-existing work, Zotero makes
| it easy for you to migrate quotable material from a web-based source
| into your notes. Highlight the relevant text, right-click (ctrl-click on
| the Mac) to open a pop-up menu, and select Create Zotero Item and Note
| from Selection. This will create a new library item with the selected
| text as an attached note. In this way, Zotero facilitates transcription
| as well as annotation.
