I have hundreds of .txt files that I need to convert to mp3 files for
revision purposes. I was very happy with Alive Text To Speech on the PC,
but they seem not to do a Mac version. Can anyone recommend a spy-free
Mac alternative, preferably free? Thanks. Alternatively, since speed is
not really an issue, how successful are Windows emulators?

You could use something like audio hijack with textedit and select
'speak text'

This one does fall into my sort of awareness. There is a good app
called Ghostreader

The other suggestion of using Textedit is fine, if you're not wanting
to have flexibility over the reading. Ghostreader does have
rewind/fastforward controls.

Thanks, but I don't need text to speech, I need text to mp3. I need to
end up with mp3 CDs I can listen to in the car.

Which is where the Audio Hijack part of Woody's answer comes in - it would
capture the audio from TextEdit and save it as an mp3.
