I ahve come across over a dozen dead laptops from hp/compaq with nvidia
chipsets. They all seem to die between 24 months and 36 months old.

Yup, the one I dealt with was just over three years old but had been
'playing up' for some time. They actually bought it from JL but JL
didn't seem interest and the owners were happy to give a repair a go
and AFAIK, 5 months later it's still working ok.
