From: Just Me on 13 Jan 2010 19:15 Think they're not related? It's only a coincidence? Both quakes occurred off the perimeters of the North American plate. See the North American plate . . . http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/earth/images/earth_plates_usgs_L_2_jpg_image.html The smaller Gorda plate off the north coast of California is sub- ducting in a northeastwardly direction under the North American plate, applying northward and eastward vectors of force to the entire plate. Haiti is located also on the North American plate over the southern subduction zone that extends in fault-lines between a number of the "microplates" forming the Caribbean tectonic group of plates, but in this case with Haiti, namely, the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. It begins under Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic and extends so far east as Jamaica. Clearly, the strike slip quake at Eureka brought sufficient pressure against the North American plate to produce another eastward going strike slip along the deformation at its southern perimeter. What else? -- JM

Maybe Sarah Palin and I should enroll together in a refresher geography course. Then after class, maybe she'll invite me over to look at Russia from her house. > > Clearly, the strike slip quake at Eureka brought sufficient pressure > against the North American plate to produce another eastward going > strike slip along the deformation at its southern perimeter. > > What else? > -- > JM

She'll probably end up hosting the Tonight Show. > > Clearly, the strike slip quake at Eureka brought sufficient pressure > > against the North American plate to produce another eastward going > > strike slip along the deformation at its southern perimeter. > > > What else? See the center that is always quiet? Some folks say it is deep serpentine and lubricious, hence no temblors from differential movement. Some folks say it is pinned, hence no temblors from differential movement. GPS markers are "ambiguous" (yeah, it's pinned). When that cuts loose, plus a fat Mach-Stem wave at the far terminous... FEMA will be greeted with cannibalism. What will be Obamanation's proximate response to the massive mulching of California?
