AFAICT "Stan", as Mr. Obama put it, didn't say anything. T'was only ever his staff that was quoted in Rolling Stone, not the General, and they were merely grousing. http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/22/excerpts-from-rolling-stones-mcchrystal-profile/ That doesn't rise nearly to the level of McArthur or McClellan, who refused orders and defied their commanders outright. Yesterday Mr. Obama himself said "Stan" didn't do that, that he was always courteous and obeyed all his orders. But, it's clear the snarky staff has no confidence in the President, and presumably their leader didn't either. The bigger problem is Mr. Obama's policy, which is to lose the war. Understaffing, absurdly restrictive rules of engagement, alienating allies, etc. It's working, but he's got to keep the focus off that. Same as the oil leak really; both are failures, both need scapegoats, etc. Looks like the same is shaping up for Obamacare too--the President was threatening insurance co's the other day. A few have already gone out of business, the rest are going to have to raise rates to cover the added costs. Obama suggested he'd make that illegal, and especially warned them against attributing any increases to Obamacare. -- Cheers, James Arthur

A reincarnation of Carter, except without the (any) real-world experience. -- Cheers, James Arthur

So, should _everyone_ in the military be able to publicly criticize their superiors without constraint? Or should it just be that top generals should be able to criticize the commander-in-chief without restraint? Maybe they should be able to criticize him first and then overthrow him, too -- hell, that works so well in South America, Africa, South Asia, just about all the 'stans, and so many other really nifty places, maybe it's how we should do things here! -- Tim Wescott Control system and signal processing consulting www.wescottdesign.com |
