It would not make a lot of sense to me to use an RPM based distro for a server if I'm already using Debian package management systems on the desktop (or vice versa).

That's the rumblings I've always heard around the trots... Debian/stable for server, Ubuntu (Debian with batteries) for desktop, and other things only if that's what your customers and/or boss expect you to be using (such as RedHat based distro's due to service contracts or pre-conceived notions and whatever other mostly non-tech reasons...).
