A change in the region of the
sacral ganglia(base of the spine)
which happens to most people sooner or later,
causes the pelvis to rotate. In most people
this rotation causes the bum to go down and
the front of the pelvis to come up. (Some
15% of people it goes the other way.)

When the pelvis rotates so
the bum goes down, it sends your
spine out more to the rear. Your center of
gravity moves to the rear. Now, in order to stand,
you must bring your head and shoulders forward.
This gradually rounds out the spine, taking away
its nice arch, especially that nice part of the
arch in the small of the back. Remember when your
girlfriend had that? When she was young and sat, the
crack of her bum was vertical and she had that
little hollow right above. Now, when she sits, the
crack of her bum is horizontal, and you don't
want to look too close.

When the pelvis rotates so the bum goes down,
then the front of the pelvis comes up, and
it gives less space for the musculature and
the guts. The result? Love handles and pot
belly. The spine curving forward compounds
this effect of bunching up the abdominal organs
and giving a squat, thick look.

How do I know all this? Five years ago
after 17 years of seafood vegetarianism
followed by 5 years of being a vegan, my bum
came back up. All of a sudden, when I got
out of bed after two days of sore back and hips,
I suddenly had to bring my head and shoulders
*back* when I stood up. I realized that this is
the way I stood when I was young!!

In the last five years, my spine has been re-shaping,
getting more and more arch. Latterly, it has been
the very lowest part, the 'small' of my
back, where things have very literally been clicking
back into place- and not painlessly, I assure you.

After the last increase in arch, my love handles simply
weren't there anymore. The spine is now rising at a
steeper angle, and there is more room for muscle
groups. The increased arch gives so much
more room for abdominal organs by lengthening
and opening out the abdominal cavity. Translation:
my belly is flat like a teenager's again.

It's not how skinny you are,
it's how your bones articulate.
