Wasn't there a mischievous pan-dimensional imp in the Superman comics called something like Mr Mztlplxwyxz, and if Superman could get him to say his own name backwards then he'd disappear back to his own dimension? -- Pd

If I'd invented a plot device like that I'd struggle to resist calling the character in question something like Elkunkuf or Spalfynaf. -zoara- -- email: nettid1 at fastmail dot fm

I didn't, because the person giving that guide to pronunciation failed to give any guide to the orthography he was using. `Masjoor' - straight away, you've gotta ask questions about that suspicious-looking `j'; then that `s'? `Maz' or `mass'? How's that to be handled? I can even come up with multiple ways of tackling the `oor'. > How does Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful pronounce "pwnage" ? Al-llah (Arabic for `the god') doesn't pronounce anything even if you accept that there is anything `real' in the idea, which I don't. Al-llah is too weird and strange to do any speaking to anyone. You should read up on it. No big beard in the sky concepts of `god' for Islam, honest. btw, Al-llah is older than Muhuammed's revelations - al-llah is the traditional Arabic `nominally top god', and the sacred sites in and around Mecca also pre-date Muhuhammed. So does the hajj. Muhummed just nicked most of the existing elements of his culture's existing religion when he was creating his new one - he smashed (quite literally in some cases) the bits that didn't fit with his new ideas and re-worked the bits he wanted to use for his new religion - for political reasons, the Arabs needed a better religion, Muhummed saw Judaism and Christianity, decided that Arabs needed something like that, and made up what he though was needed out of parts he saw lying around. The Abrahamic conception of `god' has nothing to do with compassion or mercy. Muhuammed and Jesus both appear to have had a lot to do with both[1] - but any time I read about the triple-headed JHVH/God/Al-llah beast being `compassionate' or `merciful', I get quite cross. Actually, I get quite cross about most aspects of most organized religions - Methodists and Ba'hais and all the other decent `let's all get along together' types excepted, that is (which includes Sikhism and Buddhism when they're working properly). And I can't bring myself to object to the Hari Krishnas even if they are ridiculous. Here, have some free food and be happy! Yeah, orright, can't argue with that... Rowland. [1] I plead ignorance of Judaism. Strange - 'cos I knew more Jews than Muslims when I was young, but I seem to have learnt more about Islam over the years. I knew a lot of Hindus when I was young[2] and I've learnt almost /nothing/ about that side of things. [2] A corner of NW London that I gather is now the most religiously diverse place in the country - and recently had a riot, which surely cannot be possible... -- Remove the animal for email address: rowland.mcdonnell(a)dog.physics.org Sorry - the spam got to me http://www.mag-uk.org http://www.bmf.co.uk UK biker?
