I just had another go at switching to Thunderbird 3, but failed.

It does have some nice features that are handy, mostly from a viewing
point of, er, view.

However, I manage too many accounts (four for myself and five for the
church). Thunderbird really feels good until you get to about the fifth
account setup, and realise that you have mail folders all over the shop.
I did try it, but the screen was just such a mess of 'stuff' I gave up.

Not only that, but multiple address handling is a right faff, and no
selectable signatures either.

When I switched back into Mail, it just felt so much easier, although it
also felt that something was missing (a great long list of separated
mail folders, that's what).

It's not that I find anything particularly wrong with Mail, it works
very well for me, but it'd be a bit better with some of the features
that Thunderbird has, such as the widescreen view (but I ain't paying
for a plugin to get that), and better displaying of message content
(such as smilies).

I've got four accounts setup in T'bird 3, too.

It's a pita until you realise that you don't have to use the amazingly
misnamed "Smart Folders". Just click the right arrow at the top of the
folder column to switch back to the normal per-mailbox folder setup as
was in T'bird 2.

Seconded. It's an awful feature and a poor choice of default.

Ah, that's what I was looking for. Ok, perhaps we could try Thunderbird
a bit more then.

Cheers.

Hmmm, doesn't work well with MobileMe accounts though. I just keep
getting an error 'mailbox doesn't exist' when I select Archive, Drafts,
Junk or Templates.
