I use pop peeper (pop 3 email checker), which does that and more. It
also saves me from running my email client all the time. I know of
payware clients that do what you ask but am not sure about freeware ones
as I stick to pop peeper.

There is a program Mailwasher (free, and paid versions) which does this well

http://www.mailwasher.net/mailwasher-free

(beware, the free version limits you to checking 1 email account
remotely, the paid version has no limits)

I re-read you post. Sorry, Mailwashewr is not a TB add-on, but a stand
alone program.

Not an Add-On but a separate small program Yes:
*MagicMailMonitor*
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mmm3/files/
I use it in parallel with a portable version of Thunderbird since 3
years (and some years before also with Foxmail, because it'is more
customizable than specific FM feature). I'm very satisfied about this
small piece of sw. It works like a charm.
It does what You need and much more (white list, black list, personal
filtering to delete spam directly on external server, etc.)

PS: also PopPeeper (already suggested) does something similar
