I'm now replying to the above, after visiting the guy who is running
Thunderbird on WindowsXP and am delighted to say that all is now well.

What I am NOT so happy about it that the error was all mine, as when I set
up his account I inadvertently entered the extra comma in the address. Even
worse, despite examining all entries on my previous visit, I didn't find it
:-(
