Late to this thread - but I'd certainly check the lid switch. It will never
focus or home the laser or indeed even run any motor if it doesn't see the
lid closed...

Aside from backlight, nothing on the screen.

The only thing that may be working is the backlight and lid switch. :)

Normally, the Toshiba DVD players will display a welcome screen even if
the DVD drive is dead.
