I use the heck out of this one. It provides info about some media files
when GSpot won't.

Nonsense. An application doesn't, an installer can. Don't download the
installer but get the 7z archive, and only the DLL if you use
MediaInfo as an MPC-HC add-on.

Trying new software? A little advice:
1. Get a portable build or at least a zip/7z package, whenever an
author (or reliable third party) offers that alternative.
2. Check the contents of an install package with Universal Extractor.
3. Look and think before clicking on OK/Yes/Next when installing
software and uncheck what you don't want.
4. Monitor registry and file system changes when installing software
and/or during a first run.
5. Don't let an installer phone home, unless it has to download
essential components from a reliable source.
6. Don't let an application phone home if it's not necessary for the
program to work.
