I don't see that issue, but then I'm using an nVidia card and their drivers, so it sounds like it may be an issue with the ATI drivers that only shows up due to specific kernel options. If you were interested, and you had the spare time, you could go on a kernel building frenzy changing the various options one at a time to find out exactly which one was the problem. The only problem with that is you would really need a long time to do all the builds and tests, unless you had a really fast system and probably were using SSD to speed things up even more.
