Sometimes I get a message that the USB passport drive will not unload.
Is forcing the computer to reboot always safe?

i.e. I assume that windows will write the info before shutting down.

That seems like a fair assumption. If the OS can do an orderly shutdown,
the file system state should be properly flushed out to disk. It would be
bad design to do otherwise.

And if that kind of thing was causing problems, you'd expect to see
"chkdsk" running on the next boot.

I think my problem with not being able to close out my passport was
because I was still using Explorer to list the drive.

I am not too smart, but I do catch on. :)

I had that problem with Vista. I had to close the open window before
ejecting USB drive.

I am on Windows 7 now and the OS does that for you
