Why does Outlook automatically change unread messages (that are displayed in
boldface text) to make them appear as if they were read (without boldface
text) when I click on "other" messages in my Inbox? This happens
periodically.

Because that's how the option is set on your PC. See Options, Other,
Reading Pane.
